History of Town

Tawaramoto town in Nara prefecture is located in Nara basin area called KUNINAKA. The plastic workshop I-Tunit was also opened in this area where used to prosper as one of biggest village in Kinki area since Yayoi period. In Azuchi Momoyama period, this town was prospered as a temple town with welcomed one of famous general soldier named Hirano Nagayasu.

Our plastic art workshop was built in 1982 and its shape of house is very special one called Umadashi. This house is only old one in the town to this day.

Tenacity

The art works of plastic art workshop I.Tunit are mainly decorated stones with lacquerware called Ishidai crafts.

This Ishidai crafts are not manufactured even in Japan and the specialty of this craft comparing with lacquerware products (the material is used woods) are not bend or warp due to its material (stone) for long term usage.

Process for works

Stone Mole
The ore (Tomuro stone and Shima stone) is selected in proper size and is cut in pieces with a tool like hammer. Then grind them to make a form and polish a surface with whetstones (#120 to #800). After finishing the smoothing the surface of stones, wipe dust away and dry them. When painting the lacquerware on stone, repeatedly lacquer diluted lacquerware at beginning and then changing to thicken lacquerware on the stone. After 4th paintings, the surface is polished using water sand paper and repeated painting and polishing 7 times or more. If a craft is required to plate a surface with gold leaf, the undercoat should be lacquered with special lacquerware for gold and then finally finish the leaf surface with special protection lacquer.

Ceramic Body
A porcelain clay is used for ceramic body for formed and burned with 1,000 Celsius degree, and then polished a surface with whetstones (#800). The diluted lacquerware is painted on the surface in several times and again burned with 200 celsius degree for making and finishing a undercoat. After this progress, the finishing are done as same method as stone mole.

Introduction of Master

Our plastic art workshop products mainly Stone Moles like flat plates and vases using Tomuro stone like incense burners using Shima stone and also Ceramic Bodies crafts.

TOMURO Stone
Southeast part of Kanazawa city in Ishikawa prefecture, 548m heights Tomuro mountain is a place for mining Tomuro stone (Andesite). Going back to the history of this area, it says that the first load of domain fief of Kaga Toshiie Maeda ordered to use the stone wall for Kanazawa Castle. Since then, Tomuro stone is only permitted to use for a lord as a symbol of power and regarded valuable stone, not allowed for common people because of its excellent character and beauty. Since Meij period, this rule was removed and everyone could use the stone for like historical buildings. In recent, this Tomuro stone was reported the effects for water purification, protection of putrefaction and sterilization with working of adsorption and liquation of mineral ingredients.

SHIMA Stone
Shima stone mines the basalt from Daikon-jima, Matsue city in Shimane prefecture. This Daikon-jima was formed about 20,000 years ago with a submarine volcano. The special texture porosity stone was from sea water and fit for processing having spontaneous holes and manufactured for an incense burner.

With using above Tomuro stone and Shima stone, we produce Tomuro Stone Lacquerware Square Flat Plates, Tomuro stone Vases, and Daikon-jima stone incense burners. And also as for Ceramic body, we produce Toutai Hakue Lacquerware and Toutai Mitsuashi Koudate too.

Method of handling

Our art products are basically lacquerware items even made from stones so please don't use our products with microwave oven or dish washer. Also please don't heat our products on an open fire due to occurs cracks with sudden temperature change. A gold gilt will peels off or makes a scratch on a surface if you wash our products with cleanser or pot cleaner so please use a soft cloth and handle with care.

A lacquerware means sometimes as Japan and one of Japanese art recognized by all people in the world. Our plastic art workshop I-Tunit has 30 years history and runs with senior and young people guraduated from Art University. Our aim is providing the excellent art crafts to all people not satisfied with ordinary crafts and to produce the high quality space with fastidious for the small details.
